Eat nutritious food before conception, the child will not be short
Malnutrition and sluggishness of the child can be overcome by giving the proper amount of nutrition to the woman before three months of conception. This information has been given in international research conducted in South Asian countries including India.
Despite the improvement in all indicators, malnutrition and stunting remain the biggest problems among children born in the country. Malnutrition is the cause of two out of three deaths in five-year-olds. The study has been published in the journal PLOS. Three groups of women of similar health and socio-economic status were formed for the study.
Women in the first group were provided lipid-based micronutrient supplements from three months before conception. Women in the second group were given supplements in the first trimester of pregnancy and women in the third group were given no supplements. All babies were measured after birth.
The study found that babies of women in the first group were on average 5.3 mm longer than those of women in the third group. Similarly, the weight of the babies of the women of the first group was 89 grams more than the weight of the babies of the women of the third group. An analysis of the data showed that micronutrient supplements given to women before three months of conception resulted in a 44 per cent reduction in stunting in infants and 24 per cent reduction in obesity.
In South Asian countries including India, 38 percent of children still suffer from stunting. Due to the large population in this region, 40 percent of the world's total stagnation is from this region. India has the biggest contribution in this.
According to a study conducted recently under the Eye India State-Level Disease Burden Initiative, malnutrition still remains a major risk for people of all age groups. Among the indicators of malnutrition, low birth weight is one of the biggest causes of child death.
